Costa Rica Beach Days Are The Best Days

Here in Costa Rica Sundays are family days. Sundays are beach days.  Many Tico (local Costa Rica) families spend Sunday’s at the Beach, and since we want to fit in here, we do too! We try and get to a beach at least every Sunday.  Here’s one that we’ve visited recently!

Playa Prieta

Close to where we live is Playa Prieta where you can drive down close to the beach. Most beaches in Costa Rica you cannot drive on or get very close to in a car. There are some that you need a capable 4×4 to get to and on those you can get close to the beach. Luckily we drove Chivo down here, and he is the most capable!

We are at the end of rainy season and I am itching to get the top and doors off so bad. Maybe in a couple weeks.

A couple of Sunday’s ago, we finally went to Playa Prieta. Prieta is Bonita. So damn nice and a 10 minute drive from our casa. We took the long way, though, and drove up into the mountains – four-wheeling over rocky roads, through small rivers, and in lots of mud. I had a blast! Shannon… tolerated it. Haha!

Once we got to the beach, though, we were rewarded with great views, great waves, and a nice shady spot to sit and relax. There were a few other families there that day – mostly Tico, which is how you know you found a good beach! The fewer tourists, the better!

And then there is road work in Costa Rica.

This is a fun one. Road work in Costa Rica is no day at the beach! (See what I did there?!) Driving through Mexico and Central America prepared us for the challenges of driving here – construction comes out of nowhere, signs and warnings are optional, potholes and speed bumps can come up any time, and so much more.

Here in the Guanacaste region of Costa Rica, there are many one-lane bridges. You read that right – one lane for ALL cars, not one-way each side. So you have to “ceda” (yield) on one side and let the other side go because the bridge is only as wide as one car. Fun, right?!

The bridge in the pics below is the one we have to drive over to get to our little beach town of Surfside. It is pretty much the only way into town from the south. And although our town is pretty small, there are still businesses, so even large delivery trucks have to go over this one bridge.

A few weeks ago, the bridge developed a pretty big hole in it and a crew was sent out to fix it. We were at the grocery store on the other side of the bridge and hit “traffic” (a 10-minute wait) on the way back while they worked on it. These brave guys are welding a metal plate to the bridge as they are letting cars go by. It was pretty crazy. The big yellow truck in the background had about 8 cows in it. Thank god they waited to go…

The crew welded a metal plate over the hole, and that worked for a while. But in the last week or so, the hole has widened past the plate, so it’s definitely not fixed permanently!

That’s it for now! Thanks, as always, for reading!
